Douglas Mattress Review Canada Summary
While not the cheapest mattress in Canada, it’d definitely more luxurious with 3 layers of foam and cooling gel in the top foam layer and cooling fibers in the mattress cover. And when compared to budget foam mattresses, the Douglas has much better support with soft memory foam top layers, and it has impressive motion isolation in case you share the bed with someone that moves around a lot.
The Douglas mattress is made by GoodMorning.com a Canadian mattress company.

The Douglas Mattress is made in Canada, and starts at only $779 for a Queen size. This 10" thick mattress is rated as 'Medium Firm'. GoodMorning.com offers a 365 Night Trial period and a 20 year warranty.

Unpacking the Douglas Mattress
The queen size Douglas mattress weighs in at 65 pounds. It comes in a big box that has punch out handles, but the handles have to be flipped out because the mattress fills the box enough that you can’t get the handles to swing inwards.
After getting the box to the bedroom, we carefully cut the tape on the top, tipped it over, struggled out the giant plastic wrapped monster of a roll, unwrapped it, and watched it slowly expand as it started sucking in air. Even though it was still in the bag, the mattress was able to pull some air through the seal of the bag and started to make a hissing sound.
We did have to flip the mattress over as the way it was folded up and packed into the box meant that it would be upside down after unrolling it.
We cut the top of the bag open and the mattress almost instantly jumped up to near it’s full size!
Douglas Mattress materials and care instructions
GoodMorning.com, the company that makes the Douglas Mattress, says the cover is removable and washable. That’s a good sign, as a mattress with a fiberglass layer in it will often have a ‘do not remove cover’ warning. We unzipped the cover and found the 3 different foam layers.
The top 2 layers are the softer, less dense memory foam, with the blue top-most layer having cooling gel. The thickest, bottom layer, is a denser support layer that helps minimize motion transfer from one sleeper to another.
The foam doesn’t look near as pretty as what Douglas shows in their informational graphic, but even though the color looks a little tainted, the foam is fresh and smells new, and it feels much better than it looks!
According to the Douglas Mattress tag, the removable cover can be machine washed in cold water using the gentle cycle. Then to dry, it can be tumble dried on low heat settings. Curiously, the tag says not to dry clean but perhaps that damages the cooling fibers?
The Douglas mattress-in-a-box contains polyester foam, and polyurethane gel (the gel is likely the ‘cooling’ gel in the topmost layer of foam). The cover top and sides is made with 68% polyester, 31% tencel, and 1% elastane. The bottom of the mattress cover is 100% polypropylene.
Comparing to the materials from our Juno mattress review, the Douglas mattress uses Tencel and Elastene instead of Lyocell and HDPE. If that makes your head spin, you’re not alone!
Elastene (also known as Spandex or Lycra), is a chemical fiber that is highly elastic and stretchable so it is added to the mattress cover to keep it stretchy and flexible.
Tencel fibers in the Douglas mattress are actually very similar to the Lyocell in the Juno Mattress – Tencel is branded lyocell and modal fibers that are produced in an environmentally responsible and sustainable process. Tencel is added to materials to make them softer and more comfortable on skin, and more breathable.

How does the Douglas Mattress compare to other foam mattresses?
Bed in a box comparisons can get confusing because so many of them are based on personal feeling and comfort from the reviewer. We try to keep our mattress reviews unbiased by testing and comparing in a subjective way. Sure, we also provide you with some anecdotal comments on how comfortable we find the mattress to be (and the Douglas mattress is very comfy), but we want you to know if it ‘checks all the boxes’ for the best mattress for you.
While the Douglas original mattress doesn’t have actual edge support, in our testing we found that 170 lbs piled 3 inches from the edge of the mattress didn’t cause much sag. The weight did sink into the top 4 inches of memory foam, but it didn’t seem to push into the 6″ of base support foam much.
The whole foam mattress is constructed with the same layers, so it’s safe to say that for a heavier sleeper (Douglas has a max-weight of 250lbs per sleeper with a mattress maximum of 500 lbs) you’ll sink generously into the 4 inches of foam against the lower layer of support foam. This could lead to quite a sinking/cradled feeling – you’ll have to decided if that’s for you or not.
For a lighter sleeper, you’ll only sink an inch or two. Even the mattress is rated as a medium-firm, it could be a little on the firm side for someone around the 100lb size.
In our bounce test we found this mattress to have a great amount of bounce – as the 20lb weight compressed the upper memory foam layers, the base layer kicked in and did it’s part to send the weight back up several inches.
At the same time, however, the layers of foam and the stretchy cover did a really great job of motion isolation. Considering the Douglas Mattress in Canada is at the cheaper end of the mattress price spectrum, the motion isolation was impressive.
We placed water only 36 inches away from where we dropped a 20lb weight from a height of 20 inches. While it’s unlikely your partner will drop into bed from a height of 20 inches, it’s a great way to see if a violent movement would affect the other person’s sleep. The water hardly moved – it moved less than half of what we found in our Juno mattress review (which is ok because the Juno costs about $250 less)!

Douglas Mattress Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the most common questions people have about the Douglas Mattress. We’ve researched every aspect of this bed for our Douglas Mattress Review Canada:
Can you flip the Douglas mattress?
Douglas recommends rotating the mattress every 6 months, but don’t flip the mattress. The mattress cover has a ‘bottom’ to it which would be strange to sleep on, and the mattress also has a firm foam base layer which is meant to be at the bottom of the mattress.
Where to buy the Douglas Mattress?

Who owns Douglas Mattress?

How soon do I need to unwrap/unbox/unroll my Douglas mattress?
While it’s generally a good idea to unbox your mattress as soon as you can, there is nothing listed in Douglas’s warranty terms that specify the mattress needs to be unwrapped within a certain time frame. Also in their FAQs on the Douglas Website, they make no mention of a time frame when explaining how to set up the mattress when it arrives.
A representative from GoodMorning.com (Douglas’ parent company) said this “We recommend unboxing your new mattress right away or within 14 days of being delivered. The mattress can stay in the box for 3-4 weeks, but we recommend opening it sooner to ensure it expands fully.”
Douglas vs Juno
Both the Juno and the Douglas foam mattresses are rated as medium firm from the manufacturer. However, after sleeping on both for our Douglas Mattress Review Canada, the Juno is definitely firmer than the Douglas. While it's hard to test completely, the base layers seem to be the same density. However, the Juno mattress only has 2 inches of softer foam on top, while the Douglas has 4 inches of foam on top of the firmer base layer, and that could be why the Douglas feels less firm than the Juno.
Here are some things to consider when comparing the Douglas Mattress vs Juno Mattress. The Douglas Mattress is 10" thick, while the Juno Mattress is 8" thick. Thicker mattresses tend to be more comfortable, but they also typically cost more. These mattresses are both rated as being Medium Firm by the manufacturers.
The Douglas Mattress has a 20 year warranty, but the Juno Mattress has a 15 year warranty. Warranty is especially important for an online mattress since you can't return it to a store.
