Best Cordless Drill in Canada for 2020

Review Contents:

Last updated June, 2020

Are you Canadian, searching online for the best cordless drill in Canada? This review contains an overview of 1/2 inch drive, battery powered drills that can be purchased online and in-store from retailers in Canada

A cordless drill is one of the most basic, and often first purchased, tool in the arsenal of the homeowner and DIY-er.

And yet, my oh my. In researching for this product review, I came across many interesting things – and further proves the difference between professional review sites, and simply computer generated price comparison sites.

In my search for a cordless drill, simple Google searches produced sites with roundups of interesting products:

  1. One review site listed drills, hammer drills, impact drivers and those small battery powered screwdrivers. In my opinion, those are not comparable products as they all serve specific purposes.
  2. A site (that shall remain unnamed) clearly had computer generated results in their review, as they listed a dremel, and even a drill bit set – which they listed as their cheapest option – obviously. It’s not even a drill, it’s a cordless drill accessory!
  3. Another site listed the 18v DeWalt cordless drill as the top choice – it’s been out since 2013, and you can’t even find it online in North America. These are not sites that can be trusted!

In this roundup of the best cordless drills in Canada, we stuck with actual drills – nothing fancy, nothing specialized, just good-old-fashioned 1/2inch drive cordless drills that can drive screws and drill holes. We hope it’s helpful, and if it isn’t, leave a comment and let us know how the product review could be more useful!

Our Top Choice for the Best Cordless Drill Canada

The DeWalt DCD777C2 is our top choice based on motor power, battery life, reliability and durability of the brand, and of course the price. Other Considerations in Choosing the best Cordless Drill in Canada

Although we can tell you which is the worst and best cordless drills for 2020, it really depends on you. You’ll be the one using it, and enjoying it or hating it. Make sure it isn’t too heavy, that the grip is a good size for your hand, that the automatic chuck is easy to use and not painfully rough on your hand.

Consider the types of jobs you want the drill to do, and how often you’ll be using it. Do you need a workhorse, or an around-the-house-fixall type of tool? If you will be working long hours with it, more than one cordless drill battery is a great feature to look for too.

Also consider the future – will you likely be adding to your cordless tool collection? Perhaps it actually makes more money-sense to buy a cordless combo kit now instead of just a drill, or at least pick a drill from a company that has other cordless tools you’ll want to buy – and make sure they all use the same batteries!

Wirecutter ranked it as the #4 on their list claiming it was the 'Upgrade Pick' in their product review. [November 2017]
This review on wirecutter was for the best drill for common household projects, and featured mostly small, low voltage, 3/8inch chuck drills. However, they did test some bigger drills, and this Bosch was their favorite because of it's combination of power, battery life, features, and of course, price. Their review is from a year ago, so some of the other drills might be a newer/better pick now.

DeWalt DCD771C2 20V 1/2" Cordless Drill

With a wide range of torque settings, 2 speeds, and an LED worklight, the DeWalt DCD771C2 is the cheapest drill in the DeWalt lineup that can still handle serious DIY work without complaining.

Reviewed.com ranked it as the #1 on their list claiming it was the 'Best Overall' in their product review. [September 2018]
If you don't need a 1/2" chuck for large drilling jobs, then a smaller, lighter cordless drill like this one from Makita could fit the bill. It has a powerful brushless motor, and a high-quality feel.

Dewalt DCD777C2 20V Max Lithium-ion Brushless Compact Drill Driver

DeWalt is constantly improving on their cordless drills, and the DCD777C2 Canada model is a good example. It's an increase in torque, decrease in weight and dimensions, and all for the same price as the last cordless drill model version was when it was first released in Canada.

Of course, now the previous model, the DCD771C2, is cheaper but still a good option for a cordless drill in Canada. Check out the overview and alternatives section for more on that.

Popular Mechanics ranked it as the #1 on their list claiming it was the 'Best Handling' in their product review. [September 2017]
They said it was easy-to-handle, and yet it operated like a professional grade product, and it also had the smoothest turning clutch of all the drills they reviewed. The battery life wasn't the best, but it comes with 2 batteries to keep your projects moving along.

GH ranked it as the #1 on their list claiming it was the 'Best Overall 20V Cordless Drill' in their product review. [source]
Long battery life because of the brushless motor, and lots of power in this compact drill.

Wirecutter ranked it as the #3 on their list claiming it was the 'Upgrade Pick' in their product review. [March 2020]
DeWalt's 12V was their top pick, and this 20V has the same great ergonomics but more power for tackling demanding work.

Family Handyman ranked it as the #1 on their list claiming it was the 'Best of the Best' in their product review. [March 2020]
Smart, compact design, and lightweight. LED spotlight mode, brushless motor, 2 speeds.

Popular Mechanics ranked it as the #2 on their list claiming it was the 'Best Value' in their product review. [September 2017]
Considering the ability this corldless drill has to drive screws, Popular Mechanics loved it - especially considering that Ryobi use to be the "runt of the power tool litter". This drill really shows their improved game. The only issue they had was with the AutoShift clutch that can sometimes choose the wrong 'auto' setting for the job.

TopTenReviews ranked it as the #3 on their list claiming it was the 'Decent but not the best' in their product review. [September 2017]
They say the Ryobi 1811 cordless drill has more features than others in its price range, but has low torque

TopTenReviews.com ranked it as the #4 on their list claiming it was the 'Longest Warranty' in their product review. [October 2018]
The drill produces ok torque, and is light-weight and balanced, but the battery takes an hour to charge and only lasts about 40 minutes - even with the brushless motor! It seems the only real benefit of this cordless drill is the 20 year warranty - reminds me of when Hyundai started trying to grow in popularity simply by offering the longest warranty.

Alternative to consider:

Thinking of the Rockwell Cordless Drill? Consider this one instead - it's the new version. It has all the same features, plus a hammer drill feature, plus 'batteries for life replacement guarantee.' To top it all off, it's often cheaper too!

TopTenReviews.com ranked it as the #2 on their list claiming it was the 'Best Value' in their product review. [October 2018]
It got great ratings on the user experience size, has massive torque only matched by the Milwaukee Fuel, and it has a great price - in the USA at least. It does lack the battery life of more expensive drills, but for the DIYer, it's a great option.

Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2703-22 1/2 Drill Kit Reviews

TopTenReviews.com ranked it as the #3 on their list claiming it was the 'Best for Professionals' in their product review. [October 2018]
It's the heaviest drill they tested at 5 pounds, and the battery takes almost an hour to full recharge. However, it has high power ratings (650-inch pounds of torque), it has an incredibly long battery life, and it's very versatile which makes it a great choice for a cordless drill that will get used on a daily basis.

JustCordlessDrillReviews.com ranked it as the #3 on their list claiming it was the 'I really love it' in their product review. [October 2018]
His pick as number 3 is funny - the top 2 picks are impact drivers, not cordless drills, so perhaps that means this Milwaukee M18 Fuel is actually his first choice for cordless drills?

  1. Hi there, great post! Quick question though, Which power tool brand do think is better for a beginner? Milwaukee or Dewalt? I just bought a house and I’m starting to collect some tools. Looking forward to your reply! 🙂

    1. Both are great choices, although Dewalt is often cheaper than Milwaukee, and is more than reliable and powerful enough for the do-it-yourself-er

  2. Your style is really unique in comparison to other folks I have
read stuff from. I appreciate you for posting all information about the best cordless drills.
