Spring is here, and all the top companies are announcing their new yard tools. We round up the best battery powered lawn mower options for Canadians. Ego again gains the top spot for the best battery lawn mower in Canada, but technology is improving and the competition is closing the gap!

Since the battery powered tool market is evolving quickly, it’s led to many different models and versions of the best cordless lawn mowers, so even when looking at a single company’s offerings it can get confusing. For example, Greenworks has more than 3 lawnmowers in each of it’s tool-voltage categories – 24v, 40v, 48v, 60v, and 80v, meaning there are at least 9 currently being produced just from that one company!
You’ll have to determine which is the best option for you, but there are companies who have been making electric yard-care tools for about 10 years now (think Greenworks and EGO), and standard lawn-care companies like Stihl and Toro, and then there are the standard power tool brands like Ryobi and Makita. Those power tool companies have realized that since they already have tools and batteries, they can fairly easily add a battery powered lawn mower to their lineup and keep their loyal customers.
As we’ve said 100 times before, if you already own a bunch of batteries and tools, it probably makes sense to stick with that brand so that you can use the batteries across tools and save some money. And, you may also want to consider the best cordless string trimmer so that you can swap batteries between all of your cordless lawn care tools.
Problems finding the best battery powered lawn mower
Back in 2021, Popular Mechanics released their 71 Best Tools of the year. Their pick for the best cordless mower was the Greenkworks MO60L423. It’s a 25″ wide, dual blade mowing monster, but it’s unavailable in Canada. None of the stores we checked – Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Walmart, and even the Greenworks Canada website – list the lawnmower as being available in Canada.
On another site, TopTenReviews, they recommend an EGO mower with a combination of features that isn’t available in Canada. We have a self-propelled 7.5Ah version or a non-self-propelled 5.0 Ah version, but they recommend the non-self-propelled 7.5 Ah version.

The Competition – other choices for the Best Cordless Lawn Mower Canada
It might be all-too-simplistic, but companies that have a reputation for having great lawn mowers also produce great battery powered lawn mowers. Consistently, companies like Toro, Snapper, and Stihl ranked highest for cut quality.
Some of the newer companies can beat them out on price, or on warranty length, or even on mow-time per battery, but the old-timers have learned how to cut grass well.
If you live near a lawn and garden supply store, you might want to check out the Snapper XD 82v cordless lawn mower. It is self-propelling and comes with 2 batteries for longer cut times. Plus, it just cuts well. We didn’t include it in our list because it can be hard to find if you aren’t in one of the urban centers of Canada, and it isn’t carried by any of the chain stores.
And, of course, if you already have batteries and tools from a specific company, it might make sense to buy a battery powered lawn mower in that same tool lineup. Then you can charge and swap batteries amongst all of your tools, or even save $100 or more by just buying the tool-only lawnmower and using batteries you already own.
The big tool companies like Makita and DeWalt, and store-specific brands like Mastercraft (at Canadian Tire) are coming out with cordless outdoor equipment that uses the same batteries as their 20V Mastercraft cordless tool lineup.
There are some battery powered lawn mowers in Canada that aren’t worth buying – they simply don’t compare to the best electric lawn mowers listed above. These are more budget options, but you get what you pay for. Consumer Reports says that Worx and Sun Joe cordless lawn mowers struggled in their cutting tests.
Electric riding lawn mowers
If you have a really large lawn or acreage, rather than being discouraged that 25″ wide Greenworks lawn mower isn’t offered in Canada, you might want to consider spending more and getting a cordless ride-on mower.
They can cost up to $5000, but they are comparably priced to gas powered ride-on mowers and provide the quieter, cleaner cutting experience of a battery powered lawn mower.
Ryobi has a few different options, from a 32 inch mower up to a 54 inch zero-turn cordless lawn mower that can cut up to 3.5 acres on a single charge!
I have the Greenworks 40v lawn mower and although I liked the machine in the 3 or 4 years that I have had it all 4 batteries that came with it and various accessories have died. Cheap batteries and poor customer service for me is a reason to stay away from Greenworks!
Thanks for the feedback. Battery technology keeps improving so it would be interesting to know how current batteries would hold up after 3 or 4 years of use. I know that cell phone batteries aren’t as good after 3 or 4 years of use, so is it reasonable to expect more from cordless lawn mowers?
My cordless lawn mower is a beast – it tears through everything, just make sure you plan to recharge the batteries if you have a large lawn with long wet grass

Hi Jeff, your simplest and lightest lawnmower would be a plug-in one, since it doesn’t have the weight of the battery pack. However, if you’re looking for a cordless lawnmower, than the narrower ones are lighter than the wide ones. The Ryobi 16 inch lawnmower is compact and light, and since it’s nearing the end of summer, it’s even on sale at Home Depot.
