Here’s our roundup of the best electric lawnmower Canada! Only lawn mowers that are available in Canada make it onto our lists, so you can be sure that after reading and reviewing, you can actually buy the electric lawn mower you’ve decided on.
As we found when researching the best cordless tools brand in Canada, everyone and their dog seems to be selling their own branded version of an electric lawnmower. From Kobalt at Lowes, to Ryobi at Home Depot, and Mastercraft at Canadian Tire, they all have their in-house brand of electric lawnmower – in addition to all the name brands.
For this review on lawnmowers, we decided we need to split them up into mowers with and without cords. This review if for the lawnmowers that plug in. Click over here for the Best Cordless Lawn Mower Canada review.
What type is the best electric lawnmower for me?
Just a few years ago, an electric lawnmower meant that you dragged an extension cord along behind you as you mowed your lawn.
Now, with the advent of cordless tools and an increase in batter capacity and reliability, an electric lawnmower can be cordless. As battery power has increased and costs have come down, you can even get electric powered ride-on mowers.
If you have a large yard, or have multiple areas to mow, you might be interested in a hybrid electric lawnmower – where it uses battery power when away from an outlet, but still works on an extension cord for when you’re mowing close to the house. This is a great option if you’re the type of person to forget to charge your battery – you’ll always be ready to mow when the mood (and the weather) strikes!

Cut Height Adjustment
Electric lawnmower have very few moving parts, and while a longer warranty is nice, it isn't always necessary. Any electric lawnmower that has issues will typically be found in the first few times mowing, and then they should be good to last years and years.
Things to consider when choosing an electric lawnmower
In reality, buying an electric lawn mower can be as easy as going to the closest store and buying one that looks nice. All lawnmowers will cut grass – if they don’t, return it!
However, if you need to get a little bit more enjoyment out of mowing your lawn, or if you want the lawn mowing experience to not be such a painful chore, here are some things to consider:
Do you have different grass types? Typically, most homeowners just have grass, so there’s really no need to have an adjustable height lawn mower. Almost all mowers come with a height adjustment, but some come with more adjustment.
What you’ll want to make sure, however, is that the maximum and minimum cut height is what you want. If you like a really short lawn, some of the cheaper options might not be the best electric lawn mower for you.
How do you want to deal with grass cuttings? If you’re not bagging, then you can just opt for a side discharge or mulching lawn mower. If you want to bag your grass cuttings, make sure that the lawnmower you choose has that option.
A rear bagger is typically the most preferred option for the best electric lawnmower as it allows you to cut up tight to both sides of the mower, but some people find that the bag gets in the way of taking long strides, or when pulling the mower through tight spaces.
How large of a lawn do you have? When choosing the best electric lawnmower, this plays into the bigger question of whether an electric, a cordless battery powered mower, or even a gas powered mower is right for you. Once you’ve decided on that, you’ll want to decide how wide of a cutting path is best for your needs.
A wider mower deck allows you to cut more grass with each pass, but it also means the mower is larger and heavier – and typically more expensive. Also, a wider cut path means a larger blade, which requires a more powerful motor to keep it from bogging down in long grass (so watch out for wide mowers that seem cheap but come with low-powered motors).
Of course, the opposite of this is a narrower swath that comes with a high-power motor that will be virtually impossible to bog down even in long and thick wet grass.
Are you short on storage space? If you have limited storage space, you might want a smaller mower, or even an electric lawnmower that folds up for storage. And, if you’ll be lifting the mower into a storage space (or in and out of a vehicle), you will want to pay attention to the overall weight of the lawn mower.
It's small, and lightweight, and it's low cost. It also has a powerful 13 amp motor for taking on longer grass if you're the type that doesn't mow religiously.
However, this electric lawnmower is small - it only cuts 14" wide, so if you have a large yard you'll be putting on a lot of miles walking back and forth.
At under 30 pounds, this is the best electric lawnmower if you plan to lift it in and out of a storage space or a vehicle.
If you're short on mowing time, you'll want something that takes out more grass with each pass.

At only 9 amps, the motor may be a little under-powered in long grass, but the smaller motor in this electric lawnmower also helps keep the price down.
This Greenworks lawn mower has large wheels to help it roll through the grass more easily, and it has ergonomic 'vertical' handle bars.

This Black & Decker made it to our list of the best electric lawnmowers because it has a powerful 13 amp electric motor, and a 20 inch cut width - but that does make it a little heavier than the narrower mowers.
This electric lawnmower can cut into the rear bag or mulch. All of that for an incredibly low price.

Is an electric lawn mower worth it?
The main advantage of electric lawn mowers is that they can be up to half the volume of a noisier gas-engine mower. Plus, without gas to refill, carburetors to clean, and spark plugs to change, maintenance it basically non-existent on an electric lawn mower.
For convenience, there’s even robotic lawn mowers available that will automatically mow your lawn for you. These require more setup as you first need to bury a perimeter wire to keep your lawnmower from wandering into your neighbor’s flower bed! Once set up, the mower will follow a mowing schedule and self charge itself when it’s done.
These mowers don’t bag lawn clippings, but since they mow often, the clippings are small enough to mulch back into the lawn without laying on top and sticking to bare feet and tracked into your house. According to Scotts (you know, the fertilizer company), mulching your grass can provide up to one-third of the feeding requirements for your lawn.
And if you have a truly tiny yard, there are even options for a string-trimmer that attaches to a small deck with wheels to give a sort of stringed-blade mini lawn mower. We wouldn’t suggest that as a best electric lawnmower unless you have a tiny little patch of grass.
