Should I go for an expandable hose?
Expandable hoses are lightweight, and they shrink quickly for easy storage which makes them a top choice for the best garden hose for most people. They do this by having a stretchable inner core (typically made of latex), and a protective outer shell.
When the hose is under pressure, the flexible inner core expands up to three times it’s storage length and resists kinking, twisting, and tangling. The outer core is a flexible woven shell that protects the garden hose’s inner core from punctures and abrasion.
There is one main point to remember when considering if an expandable hose is the best garden hose in Canada for you. Expandable hoses are only their full length when under full pressure.
If you plan to run a sprinkler 50 feet away, a 50 foot expandable hose will only be 40 to 45 feet long while running a sprinkler. We noticed this even when using an expandable hose with a spray nozzle. Once we pulled the trigger, the hose would want to shrink (a little bit) as the pressure dropped when the water blasted out the spray nozzle. This was a slight annoyance, and became more annoying when you were near the end of the reach of the garden hose.
Care should be taken during storage (just like with all hoses). If you’re looking for a North American made garden hose and you don’t like the NeverKink Max listed above, you might want to take a look at the Flexon Flextreme garden hose – they’ve been around since 1978.
We would’ve included their hoses in our list above, but there are very few online reviews so it’s hard to tell how much people like them – it’s likely that most of these hoses are sold in stores as I’ve seen them on sale at Lowes and Costco.
At Canadian Tire, the YardWorks brand garden hoses are a great value. For as little as $39.99, you can get a 75 foot medium duty hose – and it’s even listed as having a 4 year warranty (although the website lists 5 years, the packaging only indicates 4 years)! While it does kink fairly easily, if you follow the instructions and let the hose pressure fill up before pulling on the end it does stay straight much better.

And from experience the Flexon Flextreme hose I bought thru Costco (Canada) is absolute junk. Sure it doesn’t kink because it’s so stiff but you’ll curse it every time you unroll it and try to wash your car or roll it back up. And the screw adapters always slide way down the hose.
After 1 season I gave mine away.
It can be easy to spend too much on landscaping tools.
