Douglas Summit Mattress Review Canada Summary
There are now 3 mattresses in the Douglas mattress line – the Douglas Original, the Douglas Alpine, and the top of the line – Douglas Summit. While they are all very similar, the Summit has the most motion isolation and comfort of the three options.
Douglas says that the Summit mattress is the highest peak in their mattress range. Upgrading from one of the other Douglas mattresses to the Summit foam mattress will get you triple-action cooling, the ultimate pressure-point relief, and amazing motion isolation.
If you need the best mattress under $1000, then the Douglas Original and Alpine are great options. If you have a little more to spend, the Summit offers a better overall sleep experience. Keep reading to see what we mean.

Unboxing the Douglas Summit Mattress
Similar to all of the mattress-in-a-box options, the Summit foam mattress ships in a big cardboard box with handles on the side. Even still, this thing is a real bear to handle on your own so you might want to ask for help.
After getting it to the bedroom, we opened the top and dumped the tightly rolled foam mattress out of the box. We unwrapped the outer plastic layer (sort of a clingy plastic-wrap type) and then we could start unfolding the mattress.
There was still the airtight plastic bag around the mattress, and as soon as we cut open this bag, the mattress sprung up to it’s almost full 12 inch height within a matter of seconds. We did measure and the height was only 11 3/4 inches, but within 24 hours the mattress had gained it’s full 12-inches of advertised thickness.
Douglas Summit Mattress Materials
As the cooling and motion isolation features increase in a mattress, so do the fancy-branded names for space-age sounding materials.
The Summit mattress uses CryoFusion cooling nanofibres, infinitex thread, polar temperature balancing, elastex foam, and more. When you look past the names, you realize that the materials are very similar to other mattresses, but their ratios are adjusted to increase or decrease the cooling and motion isolation capacities.
When compared to the Douglas Alpine and Douglas Original mattress, we were expecting the Summit’s product tag to look the same. The Original and the Alpine foam mattresses seem to use the exact same materials and ratios in their mattress cover, but when we looked at the Summit, we saw some different materials.
In the Summit mattress, the removable and washable mattress cover is made up of HDPE (high density polyethalene), polyester, lyocell, and spandex. The spandex and polyester allows the mattress cover to be flexible even after washing, as long as you wash in cold water and tymble dry on low as the tag suggests.
The lyocell is really just a no-name brand of Tencel, so it seems Douglas has managed to increase the cooling properties of the Summit mattress cover by changing the ratio of ingredients and adding 1% of spandex.
As for the materials in the foam, the ingredients are the same as the other mattresses in the Douglas line. They all say the same thing: Polyurethane foam, and polyurethane gel. We assume that the density and ratio of these ingredients changed based on the layer of the foam and how much cooling gel is required.
We are happy to see that the tag confirms this is a foam mattress Made in Canada!
Testing the Douglas Summit Mattress-in-a-box
After unboxing the Summit foam mattress, we let it expand and settle for a few days. Then we put it through the paces by testing the edge support, motion isolation, and bounciness of this 12″ thick mattress-in-a-box.
Edge Support
Douglas doesn’t claim that the Summit bed in a box has any special features like edge support, but because of the top layers of memory foam being supported by a sturdy bottom base layer of foam, the edge doesn’t completely collapse under weight like the cheaper Juno mattress does.
To test the amount of edge support in this mattress, we stack weights 3 inches from the edge of the mattress – and with 177lbs stacked up, the edge of the mattress doesn’t give way very much and the weights didn’t want to topple off the bed.
That means that if you lay near the edge, you won’t feel like you’re about to roll off of the mattress. And, if you sit on the edge it’ll do a decent job of supporting you while you put your socks on.
Motion Isolation
One of the inherent properties of a memory foam mattress is that the foam has decent motion isolation. The Douglas Original mattress had reasonably ok motion isolation, the Douglas Summit had better, and the Douglas Alpine has the best motion isolation!
In our weight drop test, when dropping the weight on one side of the mattress, the water on the other side barely moved at all. If a 20lb weight can be dropped, then another sleeper could toss and turn without much motion transferring to the other sleeper.
Bounce Test
The bounce and sink test also showed how the Alpine foam mattress is responsive and would be easy to move around on, yet still allows you to sink deep enough to feel cradled and to relieve pressure off of your joints.
