A level 2 charger is important for your home if you’ve just bought an electric vehicle, or if you have an EV on pre-order and you’re still eagerly awaiting it’s arrival!
When your electric vehicle arrives, it will come with a Level 1 charging cable. They are small, portable, and plug into a standard 120V outlet. They are also slow at charging your large EV battery.
A Level 2 charger plugs into a 240V outlet similar to a dryer or oven, and can charge your EV in less than half of the time.
If you’re a Tesla owner, the Tesla Wall Connector will be the best home EV charger for you.
If you own a different vehicle, then check out our picks below. Our top pick is even Made in Canada!
Best Level 2 EV Charger Canada Comparisons:
Hey Canada! This section helps you compare the features of these products to help you choose the best option for you! Click on the product name to jump down to that specific review.
Cost
With rising interest rates and mortgage payments, saving money is more important than ever! At the time of publish, these are the prices of the best home EV chargers in Canadian dollars. These Level 2 EV chargers can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over $1000! If you want more features and remote charge control through an app then expect to pay more. Also, the more charge current, typically the more expensive the charger is. Even though getting and installing an electric vehicle charger can cost a lot, charging at home saves you money over charging at pay-per-use fast chargers. If you don't need to charge fast, however, just sticking with the Level 1 EVSE that came with your vehicle will still allow you to charge your EV overnight.
Power Output/Charging Speed
A higher amperage output means that the ev charger will charge your EV faster. If you don't need a fast charge, it's recommended to charge at a slower charge to preserve the life of your battery. For the most flexibility, choose an EVSE with adjustable power output, and make sure that your wires and circuit can handle the amperage you plan on using!
Power Cord Length
The length of the EV charging cable can be an important consideration if you have a 2 car garage, or if you are planning to plug in a vehicle outside in the driveway. National safety standards in the USA limit the cable length to 25 feet, and I imagine Canada follows similar rules so you won't find any with a longer cable than that. If you need more length you could look into extension chords made for RVs (that can cost up to $25 per foot!). Or, just park closer?
Installation
Only a few years ago most home EV chargers were made to be installed indoors only. Now, they are all built to handle being installed inside or outside in the weather and the elements. If you get one with a plug-in connection it's more portable, and can also be stolen easier (by simply unplugging the unit from the wall and running away with it).
Warranty
There was a time not too long ago when the warranty lengths varied greatly. Now, the industry has sort of normalized to a 3 year warranty period for most of the best home ev chargers in Canada. The portable EV chargers typically have a shorter warranty because of extra wear-and-tear because they are portable and moved around more.

Other Options for a Home EV Charger
ClipperCreek was one of the first companies to come out with home Level 2 electric vehicle chargers back in 2011 with the Nissan Leaf! They’ve since been bought out by Enphase, but their chargers are still great.
From a reliable company with a proven trackrecord, Enphase EV chargers are a great choice. They don’t have a ton of features, and they do cost more than some of the other options which is why they didn’t make our list. Plus, they’re almost always out of stock!
